I'm going to Las Vegas next weekend.

Whenever I tell people that they respond with something like, "Oooooooh, Vegas. Wow, that's going to be nice. What shows are you going to see? Where are you staying?”

Then I explain that I am not going to see any shows. I don't drink or gamble. And I am there to attend a summit for young adults with cancer. I tend to bum people out a bit.

The OMG! Cancer Summit is the premiere oncology conference and social networking event for the young adult cancer movement. Now in its 5th year, OMG has become a game-changing healthcare event that inspires thousands of survivors, caregivers and providers—along with scores of academic, advocacy, research and support organizations—to get organized, build community and unite as one to drive change.

Over the past year I have turned into a nerd for cancer advocacy. So much so that I am paying for my husband and I to go to Vegas to attend this event.

Liz Salmi is Communications & Patient Initiatives Director for OpenNotes at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Over the last 15 years Liz has been: a research subject; an advisor in patient stakeholder groups; a leader in “patient engagement” research initiatives; and an innovator, educator and investigator in national educational and research projects. Today her work focuses on involving patients and care partners in the co-design of research and research dissemination. It is rumored Liz was the drummer in a punk rock band.
