Brain cancer and organ donation do not mix
As a person with cancer (especially one who's taken chemotherapy pills for 24-months) I am not eligible to be an organ donor.
So imagine my surprise when--after making an appointment with the California Department of Motor Vehicles, waiting three weeks for the appointment date, leaving work early to get there, then waiting to get my business take care of--my driver license arrives within one week!
Freakin' awesome job, DMV!
But then imagine my horror when I notice that the DMV had taken the liberty of signing me up as an organ donor.
I was pissed off for two reasons.1. I have to go through the process of getting a new driver license.2. I am reminded of the fact that I can't do cool stuff to save the lives of others (i.e., donate organs, blood).
My first attempt at contacting DMV was a success: I used Twitter to tweet to @CA_DMV and I sent this message:
Got my new license and now I'm a donor-but I didn't sign up to donate--I have BRAIN CANCER. How can I get a new card?
In less than 24-hours the DMV responded to my tweet and action was taken to get me a new card. And LESS THAN ONE WEEK LATER I have a new license, sans a pink DONOR dot.
How's that for playing the "cancer card?"
P.S. I talked to Super Awesome Nurse and she said five years post-chemo I could possibly donate corneas and, potentially, skin. But everything else is ruined.
UPDATE: It’s now 2019 and I am registered as an organ donor. Through the Donate California website you can choose which organs you authorize to donate.
