Sorry, but I'm not a sellout

Being punk rock means not compromising your beliefs and/or artistic freedom for money. Hence the term selling out.

I'm not bothered that people know about my cancer since I'm the one who has been vocal about it from the beginning. However, I have a problem when people give me advice about how I should communicate my situation in a way that gains more sympathy and leads to monetary donations.

That is complete bullshit

I refuse to edit what I say on this blog in order to get “sympathy money” from people, and if this pisses you off, unsubscribe from the The Liz Army email list and stop reading this blog. Because fuck you.

To be clear, the only person who has suggested this so far is not a friend. And he knows who he is.

Liz Salmi

Liz Salmi is Communications & Patient Initiatives Director for OpenNotes at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Over the last 15 years Liz has been: a research subject; an advisor in patient stakeholder groups; a leader in “patient engagement” research initiatives; and an innovator, educator and investigator in national educational and research projects. Today her work focuses on involving patients and care partners in the co-design of research and research dissemination. It is rumored Liz was the drummer in a punk rock band.
